2017: Every single movie PT 2

2018 came so fast! Can you believe it? It was a fantastic run and here we are again.

I apologize because I haven't written a blog since late August! I was wrapped up while filming a full length movie with my awesome team. Shout out to Dad, David, and Alex for getting me through my first directorial effort. One of my resolutions this year is to write 1 blog per week, so let's start with part 2.

Remember the rules: Date. Movie. Rating. The date that I finished a movie, a novel, or a television show is the date that I record its rating.

Happy New Year ;)

7/1

THE SANDLOT

* * * *

This movie is a true classic. Probably the best sports movie of all time.

7/4

GET OUT

* * * *

A dark horse for best picture.

JACK REACHER

*

A big disappointment. One of my worst of the year, but that will come in another blog :)

7/8

SPIDERMAN: HOMECOMING

* * * *

Finally Marvel gets the best superhero in the universe. Almost a great film.

NOVEL: THE ONE THING

* * * * *

Written by PayPal founder Peter Thiel. A must read.

7/11

HACKSAW RIDGE

* * * *

Mel Gibson still has the movie moxie.

7/26

FACE-OFF

* * *

This is one of the best worst movies ever made. John Woo had his time.

7/28

VALERIAN AND THE CITY OF A THOUSAND PLANETS

* *

25 years and Luc Besson has made 2 amazing movies, and a bunch of shlock. When do we give up?

WAKEFIELD

* * *

Bryan Cranston is fun to watch, but the film is slightly tedious.

7/29

DUNKIRK

* * * *

Christopher Nolan's first war film is rock-solid.

DRIVING MISS DAISY

* * * *

A classic. Winner of Best Picture in 1990.

7/30

WAR OF THE PLANET OF THE APES

* * * *

This trilogy is so much better than it has the right to be.

8/1

RISE OF THE PLANET OF THE APES

* * *

Not as good as the sequels, but a solid foundation.

8/2

RENAISSANCE MAN

* *

No comment, just not very good.

BATMAN V SUPERMAN: DAWN OF JUSTICE

* *

This movie is awful. I don't care how big of a fanboy you are.

8/4

HEARTBREAKERS

* * *

Jason Lee, Sigourney Weaver, and Jennifer Love-Hewitt are fun to watch.

8/5

THE DARK TOWER

* * *

Great book series. Just a so-so movie. Nobody could have pulled this off in 90 minutes. I hope they take a "Walking Dead" approach and turn this into a series.

8/9

LIFE

* * *

A mediocre sci-fi thriller.

8/11

BEVERLY HILLS COP 2

* * *

I miss Eddie Murphy...

DETROIT

* * * *

I like everything Kathryn Bigelow makes.

GIFTED

* * *

Captain America in a decent dramatic turn.

8/13

SPIDER-MAN 2

* * * * *

This IS the best superhero movie ever made, and Sam Raimi is the best to ever direct a superhero movie.

8/14

CITY SLICKERS

* * *

Billy Crystal is always good for a few laughs. Far fetched, but fun.

8/18

THE MATRIX

* * * * *

Changed the trajectory of film. Keanu Reeves' 2nd best roll (Speed is #1). Simply. Awesome.

8/20

THE GREEN INFERNO

This movie is very bad.

THE VOID

* *

It starts as a love letter to John Carpenter and ends as a half-assed Hellraiser film. Truly disappointed.

8/24

LOGAN LUCKY

* * * *

I LOVE Steven Soderbergh. If you're a fan - go see it.

8/29

DEATH NOTE

I've been following Adam Winegard closely because he may be the next Carpenter, but this movie was a big step in the wrong direction.

8/31

THE CIRCLE

Stupid. Lacks heart. Makes little sense. Has no ending. On my worst of "2017" list.

9/2

WIND RIVER

* * * * *

Should be up for best picture. One of the best thrillers I've seen in a long time.

9/4

ATOMIC BLONDE

* *

Maybe I'm not the target audience, but this overly stylized film was a miss for me.

9/9

48 HOURS

* * *

Eddie Murphy again. He was in his prime. A little long, but funny.

9/10

IT

* * * *

What a pleasant surprise. Alexander Skarsgard does to Pennywise what Heath Ledger did to Joker. Took a while to let it settle, but ultimately I loved this film.

9/13

CHAPLIN

* * * *

WOW! What a cool biopic.

9/15

KEEPING THE FAITH

* * * *

The best movie ever made about a love triangle between a rabbi, a priest, and Jenna Elfman.

9/18

THE FRENCH CONNECTION

* * * *

Really, really good, but a little long. Right? Am I the only one?

9/18

TERMINATOR 2: JUDGMENT DAY

* * * * *

James Cameron at his best. This movie is the best sci-fi action movie ever made.

9/21

THE BIG SICK

* * * *

As good as the Rotten Tomatoes score. Funny, heartbreaking, and well-directed by one of my favorite Firewood campers.

9/25

2012

* *

What happened to John Cusack? Sad...

9/26

WONDER BOYS

* * * *

A fun day in the life of a washed out novelist professor. Excellent performances from Michael Douglas, Tobey Maguire, and pre-recovery Robert Downey Jr.

FUNNY GAMES

* * * *

This movie is insane. Scary, thrilling, and expertly directed. A must-see.

9/29

DRAG ME TO HELL

* * * *

Sam Raimi does it again. Funny and scary at the exact same time is a hard thing to do.

GERALD'S GAME

* * * *

2017 was the year of Stephen King adaptations. This one was top-notch.

9/30

FLATLINERS

0 STARS

This is one of the worst movies I've ever seen. I LOL'd.

10/11

BLADE RUNNER 2049

* * * *

Good not great. Long, too.

10/15

THEY LIVE

* * *

John Carpenter's film about a vagabond who finds magic sunglasses that reveal men are aliens and ads are subliminal messages. He travels to another dimension/planet and destroys a satellite in the 3rd act.

10/16

FRIED GREEN TOMATOES

* * * *

I hadn't seen this one yet. Loved it.

10/17

SEDUCED AND ABANDONED

*

This industry never ceases to amaze me, inside and out.

10/18

OFFICE CHRISTMAS PARTY

* *

Not funny.

10/25

HAPPY DEATH DAY

* * *

I didn't love it like everyone else. Just so-so.

10/31

THE CRAZIES

* * *

A fun 80's Grindhouse throwback. Shout out to Larry Cedar for his role in the opening.

11/11

THOR: RAGNAROK

* *

Oh the hype. Why? What? Huh? Just... stop. None of these movies are good.

11/21

STAR WARS: ROGUE ONE

* * *

It gets better every time I watch it, but it's still got a long way to go.

11/22

MURDER ON THE ORIENT EXPRESS

* *

Just so-so. Too much CGI, and convoluted storytelling.

11/24

THE MOD SQUAD

* * *

Fun but flawed.

THE MUMMY

* * * *

They don't make movies like they used to.

THE MUMMY RETURNS

* * *

Not as bad as I remember. Family fun type film.

ALMOST FAMOUS

* * * *

Cameron Crowe has his moments.

LADYBIRD

* * * *

Good, but not as great as the reviews post. It's solid, but nothing special. Movies like "The Edge of Seventeen", "Easy-A", "Pretty in Pink", and especially "Juno" are better.

11/26

JUSTICE LEAGUE

* *

Better than BVSDOJ, but not by much.

11/27

THREE BILLBOARDS OUTSIDE EBBING, MISSOURI

* * * * *

Stop reading this blog and go see this film.

THE HITMAN'S BODYGUARD

* *

One VERY COOL 3rd act shootout saves this mess.

11/28

STRANGER THINGS 2

* * * * *

Only 1 meh episode. The rest was awesome.

11/29

THE PHANTOM THREAD

* * * *

Really good, but a little long.

11/30

MUDBOUND

* * *

How many times are we going to make the same story? Movies like "Glory" and "12 Years a Slave" remain at the top of the genre.

12/03

DOWNSIZING

0 Stars

This is the most overrated movie of the year. A complete mess. Bad acting, bad CGI throughout. Dumb story. Alexander Payne has made some great flicks, but this was awful.

12/04

DARKEST HOUR

* * * * *

One of the best films of the year. Pair with "Dunkirk" and "Saving Private Ryan" for the ultimate WW2 triple feature.

I, TONYA

* * * * 1/2

I loved it. Very funny and extremely well-directed by the same guy who did "Fright Night."

12/05

FATAL ATTRACTION

* * * *

Classic thriller about a one-night affair gone horribly wrong. Inspired "The Crush" and "Swimfan". I will direct a version of this film one day.

12/6

KILLER KATE!

NO REVIEW

My first time watching my first movie. Wowza!

BATTLE OF THE SEXES

* * *

Pick a story, would ya?

12/10

JIM AND ANDY

* * * *

This is a must-see documentary. Sad to see Jim Carrey fall apart.

12/11

THE SHAPE OF WATER

* *

Grossly overrated. SPOILER ALERT: The white American man is the villain. The Russian spy is the hero. A woman masturbates twice on screen and has sex with a walking fish. Why the good reviews? I wonder...

12/17

STAR WARS EPISODE VIII: THE LAST JEDI

* * * *

Has some of the best moments of the entire franchise. Also very flawed.

12/22

STAR WARS EPISODE VIII: THE LAST JEDI

Second viewing.

12/23

JUMANJI: WELCOME TO THE JUNGLE

* * * 1/2

This movie was so much fun! I think I was smiling the entire time.

12/25

THE GREATEST SHOWMAN

* * *

Fun family musical. Was almost very good, but some music and story issues held it back for me.

12/28

THE DISASTER ARTIST

* * * 1/2

James Franco should probably be nominated for Best Actor in a Leading Role.

12/31

HEAT

* * * * *

Awesome movie. Top 5 all-time crime thriller.
